Description

Several different disasters, such as earthquakes, fires, and floods, might make it necessary for you to shut off the supply of gas to your house to avoid an explosive situation. However, many of us do not even know where our gas meter is!

Be prepared by learning how to do this simple task and ensure you have the right tool at hand if the need arises.

Tips

• If you know someone who is savvy about this type of thing, ask them to help you out. They can probably help you figure it out relatively quickly.
• There are simple online videos that explain how to turn off your fuel line as well. Give it a quick search!
• If you live in a rental unit, consider checking with your landlord for instructions.
• Most lines can be shut off using a standard wrench. Make sure you have a tool that will work in an easy-to-find location.
• Your shut-off may be hidden behind a panel or hard to find for other reasons, but it should be accessible without having to move items or use a key. In stressful circumstances, you want to be able to do this as quickly as possible.
• If the opportunity comes, electrify your home systems so you no longer need to worry about this explosive and polluting energy source.
